We are in the dog days for sure! This week has been brutally hot. We have a lot to do on the farm, but honestly.....it hasn't been easy to find the motivation. I do quite a bit in the morning and evening hours, but choose to do inside chores during the heat of the day. One thing I began doing this week is harvesting watermelons. I have a few different varieties growing. One variety that I've really enjoyed watching grow is called "Moon and Stars."
Moon and Stars watermelons are incredibly beautiful. I had never heard of them until I began searching for organic seeds. When I saw their picture in a seed catalogue I knew I had to give it a try. The results were amazing! The one I have pictured from my garden weighed in at 37.6 pounds. It's a big one! I did my best carving it up. It took up a lot of space in the refrigerator, but it was worth it! The flavor did not disappoint.
Because watermelons are made up of about 92% water they are incredibly refreshing on a hot summer day, kind of like the ones we have been experiencing! They are also loaded with vitamins and antioxidants. Another great tip is that there are only 40 calories in one cup of watermelon so it makes for a healthy and refreshing snack. If you have the space in your yard or on your property, (and they do take up a lot!) I highly recommend Moon and Stars for your garden next summer. They are fun to watch grow and it's even more fun to eat what you have grown yourself.
